Baukje Pietje Venema (1974, Oudebildtzijl) graduated from HKU in Utrecht in 1998.
Her work focuses on social and nature related themes that resonate with her and contain underlying narratives, such as the identity of a region, autism, or an ice rink in spring.
For Baukje, photography is not just a medium but a method to create visual order in complex and often elusive subjects. Her work offers an introspective view of the world around us, challenging the viewer to look beyond the surface to discover underlying stories and emotions.
The process is central to her photography, as she constantly pushes the boundaries of material use, experimentation, and abstraction. She frequently employs analog plate cameras, pinhole photography, video, and collage. These techniques enable her to uniquely visualize stories and reveal deeper layers.
In her projects and art commissions, Baukje often works interdisciplinarily with painters, poets, journalists, and multimedia creators. As a member of the photography collective ‘The Nomads of Sehnsucht,’ she exhibits her work both nationally and internationally.
